At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna became one of the main European centres for new Philosophies and enormous novelties in all fields of artistic creativity.
It was the time of Freud, Mahler, Schoenberg and Wittgenstein. The Austrian City gave birth to the Wiener Secession (1897-1905), a movement led by Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser that aimed to bring all arts together in works of Gesamtkunst. It brought Jugendstil, Vienna's Art Nouveau, and the Wiener Werkstatte, a workshop founded by Moser and Hoffmann that revolutionized the decorative and graphic arts.
This richly illustrated volume brings visual material together from across all the different artistic disciplines. The book is curated and authored by three leading scholars of the period. All areas of production are covered: painting and drawing; decorative arts and crafts such as ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry and silverwork; applied art and book design; fashion, photography and architecture. Above this a special focus is given to the role of women in all disciplines of the time.
