Volledige titel: El Greco. Life and Work - A New History
The Greek Domenikos Theotokopoulos from Crete, known now as El Greco, was one of the most reform-minded painters of the Spanish Golden Age.
He was raised in the iconographic traditions of Byzantine art, and experienced both Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic practice in Venice and Rome in the late Renaissance. In Spain he lived and worked mainly in Toledo and found patronage at the court of king Philip II. El Greco painted several religious subjects for which he has become famous and is also known for his original portraits executed in a dramatic and expressionistic style, with which he seems to be far ahead of his time. You will find his detailed story in this thorough, richly illustrated book. The artist's works are reproduced following their recent major cleanings and restorations, which reveal unknown facets of his art.
